After more than 60,000 acres covered, 1,400+ flight hours, and 313 operating days, I look at spray drones a lot differently than I did when we started.
The biggest lesson is pretty simple: the drone itself matters, but it is only one part of whether an operation actually works.
A lot of people start by comparing tank size, speed, swath width, or price. Those numbers matter. But once you get into a real season, water, charging, batteries, refill speed, field shape, wind, transport, parts, repairs, and crew workflow can matter just as much.
Here are the things that have stood out the most for us at TJ Aerosense.
1. The Aircraft Is Only One Part of Production
You can own a drone that is capable of moving a lot of acres and still have a slow operation if the support system cannot keep up.
We have learned to look at the whole setup: how fast water can be mixed and transferred, how batteries are being charged and cooled, what generator or power source is available, where everything sits on the trailer, how far the drone has to ferry, and how many people are involved.
That is why we push complete-system planning so hard with customers. If somebody is starting from scratch, I would rather spend time talking through batteries, charging, water, trailer layout, and workflow before the sale than have them discover later that the aircraft is sitting on the ground waiting for the rest of the operation.
2. Acres Per Hour Need Context
People always want one number for how many acres a drone can cover per hour. I understand why, but there is no honest number that applies to every job.
One of our documented DJI Agras T100 samples covered 4,424.73 acres in 47.83 flight hours across 538 flights. That works out to roughly 92.5 acres per flight hour.
That is a real number from our operation, but I would never tell somebody they are guaranteed 92.5 acres an hour. A square field close to the trailer is different from an irregular field with trees, power lines, waterways, long ferry distances, and a lot of turns. Two GPA is different from a higher carrier volume. A smooth refill crew is different from one person trying to do everything.
The number is useful because it shows what the equipment can do in a real operating system. It is not useful if it gets treated like a promise.

3. The T100's 100-Liter Tank Is About Versatility, Not Just Speed
The T100 gets a lot of attention because of output, but the part I appreciate most is the 100-liter tank.
At lower carrier volumes, that capacity means more acres between refill stops. At higher GPA, it gives you enough liquid capacity to keep the acres per load practical instead of constantly turning the job into a refill cycle.
That is why I view the T100 as a more versatile machine, not simply a faster one. It gives you a wider useful operating range depending on the application and what you are trying to accomplish.
4. We Don't Chase the Widest Possible Swath Just Because the Drone Can Fly It
Manufacturer maximums and real-world application are not always the same thing.
In our own work, we have typically been much more comfortable in roughly the 30–36 foot swath range than trying to stretch everything as wide as possible. We have seen situations where wider settings looked good on paper but did not give us the consistency we wanted once wind and field conditions were involved.
I would rather give up a little theoretical productivity and make the application right. That is also why we use things like water-sensitive paper and real field observation instead of assuming a number on the controller tells the whole story.
5. The Right Drone Depends on the Operation
There is no one spray drone I would recommend to everybody.
The DJI Agras T25P makes sense when somebody wants a compact Agras platform that is easier to transport and handle with a smaller crew.
The Talos T60X gives operators a lower-cost path into a 50-liter machine and can make a lot of sense when budget and mid-size capacity are the priority.
The DJI Agras T100 is where I look when the goal is high capacity, larger acreage, custom application, or the widest practical range across different carrier volumes.
The answer should come from the job, not from whichever aircraft happens to be the newest or most expensive.
6. Downtime Changes the Value of Everything
A drone can have great specs and still be a bad investment if it sits during the part of the season when you need it.
After operating and repairing these machines, parts availability and service have become a much bigger part of how I judge equipment. When something breaks in season, the important questions become: Can you diagnose it? Is the part available? Who is going to work on it? How quickly can it get back in the air?

7. Real Experience Has Made Us More Conservative, Not More Aggressive
The more acres we have flown, the less interested I am in making the biggest possible claim.
I care more now about repeatability, application quality, safe decisions, having a system that can run all day, and being able to support it afterward. Sometimes that means slowing down. Sometimes it means narrowing the swath. Sometimes it means waiting on wind. Sometimes it means telling a customer that the smaller or cheaper machine is actually the better fit.
That probably does not make for the flashiest sales pitch, but it is how I want TJ Aerosense to operate.
The Biggest Lesson After 60,000+ Acres
If I had to boil all of it down to one thing, it would be this:
Don't buy a spray drone. Build a spray-drone operation.
The aircraft, batteries, charging, water, trailer, crew, regulations, parts, service, and application decisions all work together. When those pieces are planned as a system, the drone becomes a very useful tool. When they are not, even a great aircraft can spend too much time sitting.
